There are two basic types of RAM - DDR2 and DDR3. The full form of RAM is “Random Access Memory”.
Normal DDR RAM has the speed up to 1600 MB/s, but DDR2 and DDR3 RAM are upgraded version of RAM. The DDR stands for "Double Data Rate". That means DDR2 and DDR3 works faster than normal SDRAM. It can transfer data at roughly twice the speed of SDRAM.
Differences between DDR2 and DDR3.
DDR2 | DDR3 | ||
---|---|---|---|
1 | Definition | DDR2 stands for Double Data Rate Version 2. | DDR3 stands for Double Data Rate Version 3. |
2 | Speed | Up to 3200 MB/s | Up to 6400 MB/s |
3 | Cost | DDR2 is cheaper than DDR3 | DDR3 is costlier than DDR2. |
4 | Transfer Rate | DDR2 gives 4 knowledge transfer per cycle. | DDR3 gives 8 knowledge transfer per cycle. |
5 | Supply Voltage | Required is 1.8 volts. | Required is 1.5 volts. |
6 | Power Consumption | DDR2 consumes more power | DDR3 consumes less power than DDR2 |
7 | Memory Reset | No memory reset option available. | Memory reset option is available. |
8 | Clock Speed | Between 400 MHz to 800 MHz. | Between 800 MHz to 1600 MHz. |
